Every so often we just have to bring out the lovely Rune, dust him off and hope that he will catch someone's eye. He came to us as a stray in the summer of 2010, with his scalp all torn to bits (see photo right) and a big chunk out of his ear. But he healed up very nicely indeed, and turned out to be an absolutely lovely boy, fairly quiet and affectionate, who gets on well with other cats and enjoys having a good old purr on the sofa.

He'd love to find someone who will adopt him. He is of course neutered. Not sure how old - probably in his middle years.

Three timid 'Victorian ladies'

Pebbles, Smudge and Trixie are a mature mother and two daughters who have been with us over 2 years now, waiting for a home together. They are rather vague, inclined to be easily flustered, are worried by big open spaces and can get a bit agitated in new surroundings. However, they are very gentle in nature and rather remind us of three Victorian church going ladies who have lead very sheltered quiet lives! They would be ideal for a quiet indoor home with older owners who are themselves very gentle and understanding.

Melanie: loves people, but not other cats

When Melanie first came to us she didn't want to know anyone - neither human nor feline. Since then she has turned into a most affectionate and playful cat, who would be excellent company for anyone who is looking to share his or her home with just a single cat. She just loves to play and to be stroked. And she has the funniest white paws with black pads!

Unfortunately, she still doesn't like other cats, and we would therefore like to find a home for her quite urgently, as she takes up a whole room in the house of the volunteer, who looks after her.

Homed: Whiskers, Scruffy, and Jezza

We urgently need new homes for Jezza, Whiskers and Scruffy. Jezza is the Persian type cat, she's 5 years old. Scruffy, the tabby, is four, and needs a lot of tlc. Whiskers is 18 months old and is mum to a litter of kittens.

They are still living with their owner who is finding it very difficult to cope following family bereavement. We do not have the space to bring them in so are trying to rehome them direct. They are friendly and can go separately.

They are in the process of being neutered and having flea and worm treatments and a general MOT at the vets.

Another bad week

We'd like to share a letter Mary Knott wrote to an editor of one of the local papers this week:

"Things seem to go from bad to worse these days.

This morning I had a call from a member of staff at the Beacon (NHS Mental Health Services). Staff arriving for work had found a kitten in a box on the step. I asked them to take it to the nearest vet which was Plunketts in Ramsgate. Staff there were shocked at what they found. A tiny kitten barely 6 weeks they thought, covered in fleas, severely anaemic, suffering with cat flu, thin and underweight. One eye was punctured and septic, and the other eye was also infected. The eye would have to be removed but the general condition of the kitten was so poor that they didn't think it would survive surgery, and the only option was to put it to sleep. God knows what suffering that poor soul had endured until it was finally at peace. Why are people so wicked?

A few hours later I had to take the little fellow in the photo to the vets - similar case. Found on the street, flea ridden, thin, dehydrated, grossly ulcerated tongue and gums and suffering from flu. Thankfully a blood test for Feline AIDS and Leukaemia was negative so we are hoping antibiotics and good food will help him recover. He looks such a tragic sight, with his big bandage covering the blood test site!

This is where our money goes, not on wages or overheads, but it is proving increasingly difficult to meet the costs of this rescue work when we have over 100 cats and kittens in our care. People can help us by supporting our Saturday market stall in Ramsgate or by donating money or cat food.

Shelby: needs a home where she can be the only pet

Shelby is about 18 months old and spayed. She came in with her two kittens, who have been homed, but she really doesn't like other cats and urgently needs to find a home where she could be the only pet. She can be very friendly with people but has been feeling under pressure as she is currently staying in a house with many other cats. She needs her own space in a quiet home without children.

Briar and Clover: twins urgently need a home together

Affectionately know as 'the cart-horses' Briar and Clover, a boy and girl, are identical twins, so alike we're not sure who's shown in this photo.

They were born last year and do everything together. They are affectionate, if a bit shy, and absolutely gorgeous, but they have completely outgrown their accommodation with us and need a real home with a garden. They are a real priority for rehoming and need to go together.

I haven't blogged in ages - that doesn't mean we haven't been up to our eyeballs in cats, dogs, animal welfare issues, and basically running around like blue-arsed flies, as we tend to do. We have, and I'll introduce some of the cats we are trying to home in the next few posts. But I've been quite busy with another thing:

Sile, one of our volunteers, who looks after our elderly and generally unhomeable cats, as well as the occasional kittens, kitten mums, and other needy felines, is also a novelist. I don't know how she does it. And I've just helped her publish a new edition of her novel The Saxon Tapestry as an e-book on Amazon Kindle and Smashwords.

It's a novel of the Norman conquest centered on the character of Hereward the Wake, it's available in two parts - The Changeling and The Loom of Battle - it's an amazing novel, and it really doesn't cost a lot. And I can cheerfully confirm that none of the proceeds will go to Cats in Crisis, because Sile already works incredibly hard for us, and deserves every penny she can make from it.

Cats who've had it tough

In April we were called for help when a cat in the Newington Road and swimming pool area of Ramsgate was found shot in the head with a pellet. The owner was unable to pay anything towards the treatment, so we picked up the £200 vets bill. The Thanet Gazette/Times kindly ran an article for us asking for financial help and we are very pleased to say that the donations that we received more than covered the cat's treatment.

Here's what we are going to do with the surplus:

This fellow was found with huge wounds all round his neck. He did not appear to have an owner or a home, and spent nearly four weeks at the vets where he underwent intensive treatments. Progress was very slow, but at last he has been discharged into Mary's care. We anticipate at least another four to six weeks before we can release him back to where he was found, where the lady who was feeding him has agreed to give him a home. Any surplus of the donations we received for the cat that was shot will go towards his vets bills.

This means we have a lot of people to thank: the kind and generous people who sent us donations, and the Kent Regional News and Media Group, who have been just incredibly supportive. A big big thank you from Cats in Crisis Thanet.

And by the way, the Thanet Times has just published another article about us. We are pleased to report that the three little dogs and Lucy have been homed, although Millie is still looking for a forever home.

Prince's diary

Prince was a busy boy on Monday, just haven't had the chance to publish his text until now:

'Well so far 2day I've pottered around the house surviving the odd low keyed hiss from the guys. I've stolen a few mouthfuls of smoked mackeral designed 4 Martin's packed lunch. I've tried 2 climb up the wallpaper in the study and all but did it. Must have put a bit of weight on! Have played in the washing basket and bitten a bit more of the raffia off the lid. Edward started it! Have charged around the house skidding on tight turns and am now lying in the study window contemplating the sea mist. Yuck.

'Wrote a poem and sent it 2 Angela this morning. All pretty much another day in this boy's new life. Big boss home soon. More cuddles? Hurrah. Still miss u Mary mummy. I don't forget such love easily. Hugs purrs and writhes Prince xx'

Last Thursday, Prince sent us this text (with apologies for the late update):

'Well not a lot 2 tell u about 2day as I've been shut in until 5 as everyone has been at work. However once I was given the run of the house I led a posse into a bedroom that normally has the door shut and we all hid under the bed and wouldn't come out so the door is still open. Seems like I might be bit of a ring leader! I left one of my toy mice in a brown paper bag last night. That impressed them! Off for a bedtime cuddle now. Tired boy. Zzzz'

And this came last night:

'I've just done a vertical leap up to the shed window which is open and I'm having fun crashing around in there. Working up an appetite 4 the roast lamb!

'Big news! Was given my freedom yesterday pm. Cracked the catflap and found the woodshed v quickly. My nickname is thunderpaws. Never walk if u can run and never run if u can bounce! Had snuggles in bed this am which involved a bit of mild hissing from the guys but do I care? Nope. Thrashed my tail furiously at those parakeets from the bedroom windowsill. That scared them! Isn't life wonderful?'

Wildlife habitats in your garden

Last autumn, a neighbour of one of our volunteers had a pond at the bottom of her garden removed, believing that this would make her property more sellable. The pond had been there for at least 25 years, and each year a colony of frogs would arrive in the spring to mate and lay their eggs there. The neighbour thought that the frogs, finding their pond gone, would simply go somewhere else this year.

Over the last week the weather warmed slightly, and along came the frogs only to find the pond gone. So, with no water to lay their eggs in or get protection from, they all perished - fifteen small and one larger mating pair. One poor soul made it until this morning - its back legs got stuck to the cold patio, and it needed to be wetted repeatedly with water until it could be released. Its legs irreparably damaged, it died this morning.

We know that times are hard and it's difficult to sell a house these days. But if you have a precious habitat like that pond in your garden, think about getting advice before removing it, or find out more about the species that use it. You never know, a prospective buyer might even consider such a feature an asset - I know I would!

The further adventures of little Prince

Prince has started keeping a diary in his new home, and his mum Helen is sending us the updates. Here's how he got on today:

'Not going 2 well with the boys they hiss at me but Ruby is quite nice. Haven't met Bella yet. I've lost all my toys and 3 walnuts. Lots of under chair searches have not born fruit. Super cuddles tho and I'm eying up those birds 4 once I'm allowed out! Miss u but I like it here. Xx'

And a little later today:

'Well mummy - my new mummy opened up entire house 2 me this pm and locked the cat flap. Much better meetings with the big boys. Met Bella. She's ace. Pity she's an older woman and u gave me the snip! Have spent the afternoon thundering around and have sadly lost the latest ball and 2 malteezers. I think they self destruct after 10 minutes! Heigh ho v tired boy going 4 big zzzz.'

A warm welcome to our patron, Mike Stevens

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome local radio presenter Mike Stevens as our charity's first patron. Mike is a presenter on, and co-founder of, radio station Academy FM Thanet, where he can be heard every weekday from 10am to 2pm.

Mike interviewed our publicity officer Anne Buckley for his 'In the Armchair' slot at the start of February, and kindly accepted her invitation later that month to put his name to our charity's rescue and rehoming efforts.

A real animal lover, Mike lives in Minster with his wife Audra and two dogs - Charley, a west Highland terrier, and Buddy, a Spanish Podenco - and we are hoping to persuade them to take in a handful of our cats, by and by. :-)

Homed: Prince, watching the Rugby

We are always really happy when someone who's adopted an animal from us lets us know how their new family member gets on. Especially when their update is as sweet and funny as this one (by text message) - about a cat called Prince, who moved in with his new mum Helen on Friday:

'We've played with everything we've eaten everything and we've captivated the hearts of all.

'He is absolutely adorable and has such good manners. Jan coming over 2 have cuddles in a minute. Thank you so much Mary 4 giving us your special boy. He is already healing my sad heart and how.

'He is amazing. His balls however are a little bit sore poor boy. He's watching France Italy at the mo but hasn't shown any firm support 4 either side.'

Prince is a little love, we were dreading having to find him a new home as it had taken Mary so long to get him healthy after his really bad cat flu. He was found on the streets, really ill, and so little. Mary had to feed him by hand, and he was always so good and gentle and tried so hard to get better. Then Helen came along at just the right time, and we couldn't be happier for him.

Spitty - all he needs is love

Spitty is in a foster home; he got his nickname because he was nervous and would hiss and spit and generally freak out, because he spent his first few months in an abusive home. Spitty is now calm but nervous around people, although his fosterers have gained his trust and are able to hold him and stroke him. He is neutered, 7 months old and all black.

Spitty needs to be homed with special people whot can show patience and understanding - he is nervous, but he really wants love and cuddles.

Leo had an operation

We have had a lot of interest in boisterous border collie Leo and have a potential home lined up for him. However we had some bad news a couple of days ago: Leo has been diagnosed with a congenital deformity of his shoulder which, if not treated, would mean he would develop arthritis as he gets older. He would become crippled and suffer a great deal of pain, so not to operate is not an option.

We have managed to negotiate the cost of surgery (which we have been assured is an extremely reliable procedure) down to £600. On top of this we have to add at least another £150 for the x-rays.

The surgery went ahead today and Leo is doing well. Once he gets the all clear from the vet, he can be formally handed over to his new owners and hopefully he will have a long and happy life with his new family.

We are not in a financial position to afford the £750 and are hoping that sufficient donations come in to pay for his treatment. If there are any kind hearted dog lovers out there, would you please consider making a donation towards these costs?

Sorrell - she'll never bore you!

Sorrell - what a heavyweight she is! Affectionate, and very very greedy, she is also a terrible thief. She is capable of ripping open a bag of biscuits, scattering the contents everywhere, and stuffing her face, thus providing a free meal for the other cats who were delighted with this unexpected rain fall of cat bikkies! Her antics will both amuse and exasperate, but she will never bore you.

She had been living rough and gave birth to a litter of kittens in someone's garden, all of which were sickly and never survived. She has been through a tough time in the past - to say she is relishing her new life is a huge understatement!

Thanks for the write-up

The Thanet Gazette kindly published an article on Friday, 11 February, about our beautiful cats at Manston. As a result, six out of the nine have found new homes. Thank you, Gazette!

We are very hopeful that Maisie will also be homed in the next few days. This leaves Hope (now homed! Note, 6 March 2011)(left) and Monty still looking for loving homes - as is so often the case, black and black and white cats are the last to be adopted.

This doesn't mean that our numbers are declining, far from it. The waiting lists are ridiculously long, but we are trying to juggle things around as best we can, including using robust outdoor cat kennels for the 'neighbourhood strays' once they have been castrated, treated for fleas and wormed and any other essential treatments given. They can then stay in their existing locality until such time as we have homes for them, usually on farms or small-holdings. We are always looking for suitable places, so if you are looking for a good rodent controller please let us know.

On a more positive note, our new Publicity Officer, Anne Buckley, is delighted to report that she has had a most charming and supportive letter from Joanna Lumley, who most people will know is a great cat lover, together with a cheque for £100 towards our work, which came as a wonderful surprise.

Can you help O'Malley?

We first featured O'Malley on this blog last April. He was friendly, energetic, and frankly a bit potty, and in need of lots of space. We finally managed to find him a home in a semi rural environment, with lots of access to the outdoors.

Tragically, he is now back with us, having suffered an accident that smashed his knee. He had to have his leg amputated and is currently recovering.

Major surgery like this is very expensive, and we would greatly appreciate any donations towards the vets bill for his treatment.

But in spite of being now crippled, O'Malley is also still a freedom-loving cat, who will need access to a large garden, but with much more supervision than before. He is happy with other cats and with adults, but hides from children.

We've been talking quite a lot lately about those of our cats that are housed at Manston Kennels, and which now very urgently need new homes. Here is a complete roll-call (anti-clockwise from top left):

Homed: Tia: dark tortie, female, age 5, friendly, and Dinky: tabby, female, age 5, friendly - they are sisters and inseparable, and must be homed together

Monty: black and white, female, age 2, friendly but also very feisty, and more suitable to life on a farm or smallholding.

To recap what Mike and Anne talked about:

We currently look after over 150 cats, of which many are staying in our volunteers' own houses or with foster carers. And four dogs.
Nine cats are at Manston Kennels, and they are most urgent for rehoming; see their pictures.
Neutering is so, so important. A young cat can get pregnant at five and a half months, and many unwanted kittens end up with us. Thanks to the Cats Protection we can provide help towards the cost of neutering if you are on a low income or benefits.

Leo (we know he's a dog...)

Leo is a beautiful young border collie (18 months old), who was rescued by his present owners from a bad home. But he is very bouncy and energetic and is proving too much for them in their small house and garden.

Leo is very friendly, and good with children and cats. But he needs an owner who is able to give him the training he needs, lots of open space and a great deal of exercise.

Star and Moon - desperate for fuss!

Star and Moon came to us as tiny kittens in July. They found a home in September, but were returned to us, having suffered numerous health problems, none of which, the vet assures us, are likely to have any long-term effects on their wellbeing.

They are now about 6 months old, and rather bigger than in the pictures, but still as cute. They are very affectionate, and are now depserate for a home of their own, where they get fuss and attention. They need to go to a home with no children or other pets, ideally with a very capable owner.

We are going to pay for their neutering (due next month), but would hope that their new owner would make a donation towards the cost of their jabs - they are both fully vaccinated.

Sprout and Pudding

Sprout and her bigger brother Pudding are very shy kitties who took a long time to socialise. They came from chaotic and noisy home with children and several dogs, so they need a quiet place now. They should possibly be indoor cats for a few months until they are neutered and have fully gained their confidence.

They are very happy living with other cats, provided they are gentle too.

Although Christmas is officially over, we thought we'd share this lovely Yuletide greeting sent by two cats that were homed through Cats in Crisis:

"Hello all you cats. Just a short letter wishing you all the best for Christmas and that you all get new homes very soon.

"We have had a bad year this year. Bracken only caught one bird and he dropped it when daddy chased him up the garden and the black cat next door grabbed the bird and jumped over the fence back into his garden and proudly took it into his house. The men cut down the trees over the other side of the back fence so that we couldn't chase the squirrels again because they went away. The frogs we chased disappeared as well (and they were easy to get!!!). Bracken couldn't find any goldfish again as the people down the road had moved, and mummy and daddy's daughter when she visits brings her BIG black cat and we all hide!! And when I'm tucked up on daddy's chair in the morning (Bonnie) they make me go out into the garden telling me it will do me good - do me good - I have to get my 22 hours a day sleep you know!!!

"But hey ho we got turbot for Christmas (paws crossed) so we heard and expect we will have some of mummy's and daddy's grub if we look pretty and sweet and squeak and cry enough.

Hudson, or: how adopting a kitten can save your life

Our friends Steve and Paula adopted several cats from us this year, in addition to the cats they already had. Two of those new cats came from Chris, who looked after feral kittens for us, and who fell very ill a few months ago. This is Steve in his own words:

"My wife and I met Mary Knott when we adopted two kittens from Chris (God bless, get well soon!). Our tabby was called Dave, and the little black and white was called Hudson.

"On the night of our anniversary celebrations we finally retired to bed and I was badly affected by indigestion. At 2am my chest problems got worse and I rolled out of bed so as not to wake my wife. This turned into a heart attack and it was all I could do to just breathe because at the time I was sweating heavily with the pain and I could not wake my wife and felt useless and alone on the floor.

"Then Hudson came to bed where he lays next to me normally. Sensing that something was not right he started to walk around me, purring and washing me and doing the 'milk dance' on me. I could tell he was very worried, and I no longer felt alone. When he realised I was in real trouble he started yowling for help and after a while my wife woke up. She called an ambulance, and Hudson kept the stairs clear when they arrived.

"Two weeks later I returned home. In hospital I missed all my cats, but mostly my black and white paramedic. Roast chicken for him and his brothers and sisters, and our thanks to Mary and Chris without whom I wouldn't have such nice furry kids!

Merry Christmas everyone. Give a cat a home for Christmas."

This is a message from Sile, who looks after most of our elderly and unhomable cats:

"Joseph has just arrived. He is black and not very young. He is also disturbed and very frightened. Dear Moses, who has also just lately arrived, lets Joseph come and sit next to him. No-one minded Moses, and still less does anyone mind Joseph. If you don’t want to talk, that’s fine by them! All Joseph wants to do is run out into the pen and sit in a little wooden hut that is meant for summer use.

"And still they come in! Although there have been quite a few sad losses this year, there is double that number waiting to come in and it isn’t just the old ones that would normally come to me. I now have ten cats of a year and under, mostly siblings, and all best friends, and Joker too, all looking for nice homes.

"Walpole is lucky, having found himself a kind and generous sponsor. Sadly I have at least another dozen who through age and infirmity or temperament will never get their own home and who are desperate for a sponsor to pay for little tempting morsels of dinner or help meet their increasingly expensive vets bills.

"One such is Edmund Ironside: a Felix lookalike, he arrived in a trap with his face full of holes where the abscesses had been drained. Now he sits under a chair in the living room (though I’ve caught him when he thinks I’m not watching, sitting on the settee!) His appetite is huge. He isn’t aggressive, is spotlessly clean and gets on well with the other cats but won’t let me touch him. Edmund Ironside has become yet another fixture! I know they would all like a nice home of their own, but then so would I!"

Since Sile wrote this, another very, very old cat has come in: Tammy came in with multiple health problems, which were the reason she was rejected by her owners, who found her too expensive and too much trouble. Sponsors would be much appreciated as she has a lot of ongoing treatment for thyroid and other age related conditions. She was in a very bad way when she came to us, having been denied proper treatment for a considerable length of time, so she has a lot of catching up to do, though as you can see in the photo, she loves her dinner!

Sid: a very sad story and an appeal for help

On Friday night Mary had a phone call from a distraught young woman. One of her young cats, Sid, had just been badly mauled by a neighbouring Staffordshire terrier, which had jumped over the garden fence and savaged the cat. The woman, who has no transport and little money, had been telephoning around, unable to get any help, until she reached Mary, who helped her rush Sid to the duty vet.

We understand the dog is over two years old, badly controlled, never taken for walks and totally untrained, and that it has 'nipped' children in the past. Sid's owner is worried the dog will attack her own children when they are out playing. The dog owner's response to the attack on Sid was, 'It's only a cat'.

One of Sid’s back legs had been so badly mauled that it had to be amputated. Sadly, he has just died from shock after the surgery. He was a young, friendly, and much loved companion, and this has been a terrible shock for the family, especially the children.

The surgery to try to save Sid's life still has to be paid for. His owner cannot afford anything towards the cost of the surgery, particularly at this time of the year. We felt we simply had to help this family, and so are picking up the bill, which will be at least £250.

Petition: save Romney House Cat Rescue from closure

Bromley House Cat Rescue is a self-funded, non-profit making charity operating in Downe, Kent. Established in 1998, they work with a number of animal welfare groups such as Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, Cats Protection League and the RSPCA.

Bromley House Cat Rescue is now acutely under threat: a closure notice has been served on them by Bromley Council. The Rescue has posted a letter explaining the circumstances on their website, together with a petition for which they urgently need as many signatures as possible: www.romneyhousecatrescue.org.uk

It is easy to overlook the importance of the work such charities do - helping the feline community always benefits the human community too! Please sign the petition and circulate this request to as many people as possible.

A hedgehog reminder: if in doubt...

The story is this: Thanet Wildlife Rescue were called in the other day, when someone found a baby hedgehog in their wheelie bin. As the little critter couldn't have gotten in there by itself, they assume that someone found it, thought it was dead, and disposed of it. It was alive however, and is now cared for by Fran Partridge at the Animed Vet Centre in Whitstable.

The upshot is: if you find a baby hedgehog and are in any doubt whatsoever whether it's alive (and they do slow way down in the winter!), Thanet Wildlife Rescue would much rather come out and find it's dead, than not be called at all.

Shadow

Shadow was taken to a local vet as a stray with a nasty wound on her leg. Never claimed, she has now been treated and is staying with one of our new foster mums who rescues Persians.

Shadow can stay there long term but if anyone wants a really friendly long haired cat, this is the cat for them.

Joker - long story, could you be the happy ending?

The first time we came across Joker, she had brought a litter of kittens into someone's garden. We rescued the babies, but were unable to catch her. We worried, as we then heard several reports that the collar she was wearing had slipped around her body. Eventually she crawled into the same garden again and into the house, gave birth to two kittens, which she promptly rejected, and was obviously so ill that she and the kittens were rushed to the vets.

Over several months, the collar had become deeply embedded and the wound infected. The stench was dreadful. The kittens were taken to be hand reared by a veterinary nurse, and have done well enough to be rehomed. Joker underwent major surgery and was in the vets for many days.

Once on the mend, Joker became a cheerful and perky little soul and happily tolerated all her visits to the vets, numerous pokings and proddings and changes of dressing! We would love her to go to a home where she can be pampered and possibly be an indoor cat.

Rune - a real survivor

Hedgehog appeal - on behalf of Thanet Wildlife Rescue

If you see a hedgehog out during the day at this time of year it may need your help, especially if it seems small, or is injured, coughing or snuffly. It may either be too young and undernourished to hibernate or need to be vaccinated against lungworm.

If you come across such a hedgehog, please catch it (for example by throwing a towel over it) and put it in a ventilated container or empty bucket. You can then either:

take it to the nearest vet
or telephone Sandra from Thanet Wildlife Rescue:
01843 844 532 - she'll arrange for it to be collected.

Last winter Thanet Wildlife Rescue saved 70 hedgehogs. In the spring the animals were released back to the location where they were originally found.

If you find a hedgehog that needs help but don't live in Thanet, taking it to the vets is still a good idea. You can also check the British Hedgehog Preservation Society website for advice.

Some sad news

Last week we lost little China, who came to us as a very frail little kitten in early June. She had been born as the runt of the litter, more than an hour later than her siblings, and was tiny and delicate, didn't have a good appetite and was never very well. Mary and the vets fought hard for her, and it sometimes seemed that she was picking up, but it finally became clear that she was never going to have a reasonable quality of life, and, at the vet's recommendation, she was put to sleep.

Three of the elderly cats looked after by Sile have also passed away recently: ancient Cleo, who was 22 and blind, and Ivy, who was probably around 20, and had kidney problems. More unexpected was the death of Churchill, who was a cheerful old soul in spite of his neurologically damaged back legs. Churchill died in his sleep, with a bellyful of prawns - possibly the way any elderly rescue cat would like to go. All three spent their last years safe, well fed and well cared for. They will be long remembered, but the vancancies they left in Sile's house have been all to easily filled with new arrivals.

A cat we called Shelley (right), who crept in through somebody's open window to give birth to her kittens behind a TV, had to be put to sleep. Shelley just did not get better after the birth, and the vet discovered a host of swollen lymph nodes in her abdomen. Sadly, her kittens also had to be put to sleep, as they were just too tiny to survive without their mum. We do wish people would have their cats neutered, as tragedies like this could be so easily avoided. It's not expensive, and neutering assistance is available to those who can't afford it.

We have also seen, in the past month, a number of cats with dreadful injuries, the result of either deliberate cruelty or simply cruel neglect - more about them another time.

Mostly this blog is about finding homes for the many cats we care for, but all of this stuff is going on in the background. Some times are better, some are worse, and it's been a bit of a tough summer. But there are victories as well as defeats, some great homing successes, and of course the fantastic people who support us by giving their time, money, and by offering loving homes to homeless cats.

Tiggs: beautiful and independent

Ginger Tiggs had an owner who died and he has been used to wandering around on his own. He is a young chap and rather exotic, with a lovely, long-muzzled face and characteristic yowl.

He is somewhat feisty and loves being outdoors, so he needs a lot of space. He should calm down now he has been neutered, but he is probably not suited to a home with young children or dogs and definitely not to a home with other cats.

Tiggs is very vocal and affectionate, but only on his terms.

India and Cairo

India(tabby) and Cairo (tortie) came in with their sister Paris, who sadly had to be put to sleep, due to a rare metabolic problem. They are both beautiful girls, but when they arrived they had sore, sticky eyes and were shaking with fright. It took them a long time to be comfortable with being stroked and to eat normally, but they are both doing well now.

India needs a very peaceful and calm home, Cairo is a little more robust.

Sometimes good things happen, and this is one of them. The Support Shop, opposite Waitrose in Ramsgate, now supports Cats in Crisis as its chosen charity. The shop's declared aim is to help us clear our (near astronomical) vets bills!

Barn cats

We often have cats who, because of their temperament or uncertain toilet habits, are not suitable for the normal domestic environment. Current candidates are Shadow, Pepper, and Louis and Satchmo, who, until they find a suitable home, are living in far more confined circumstances than suits them, and who take up space we urgently need for the many other cats that are coming in almost daily.

These cats can be very happily homed into stables, farms, small-holdings, and so forth, where they will keep down the rodent population. They will of course still require regular meals and proper shelter.

Walpole

Walpole is a dear old, old cat, who was found wandering in Margate, full of dirt and fleas, and with his mouth in a dreadful state. He has only one tooth, and we are not sure if he has a tumour in the mouth, or just a rodent ulcer.

However, in the few days he has been with us, plus a couple of visits to the vets, the improvement has been remarkable. We think he might belong to an older person who may have gone into care or hospital, have died, or can no longer look after him. Someone kind to care for him in his latter days would be wonderful, or perhaps some donations towards his ongoing veterinary care?

What is it about black cats?

Because so many of the cats we are trying to rehome are black, somebody commented recently, 'Do people in Thanet hate black cats?'

And the answer is, no. No more than anywhere else in the Anglo-Saxon world. Black Cat Rescue in Boston, USA say that black cats are only half as likely to be adopted as cats of other colours. 'As long as it isn't black' is a response Mary frequently hears from people who express an interest in adopting a cat.

Could you help us reverse that trend? Check out Poppy, Caspar, Monty, Sable, Billie, Christopher Nash, Lucky, and Millie and Cookie. Not to mention Louis and Satchmo, and Pepper, who are looking for homes as barn cats.

Just as any ginger or tortie or tabby or pedigree moggy out there, they'll bring you good luck: they're cats! They'll make your flat or house a home.

Freedom at last: Louis and Satchmo

Louis and Satchmo are young brothers, friendly but totally manic. They have been tried in a home and smashed several ornaments, so are back under lock and key again. We think they would be ideal in a stable/small-holding type situation where they can have lots of space to run off all their energy. They would make super mousers but need rehoming urgently as they are going stir crazy in their current confined space.

Update, July 2010: these two chaps have been waiting so long for a new home and we decided it was wicked to keep two such spirited, lively cats cooped up in a cattery pen, so we transferred them to one of our foster mums who lives on 'stable land'. They were kept in for two weeks, microchipped, and then let out. They are having the time of their little lives, coming home regularly for meals but able to burn off all that surplus energy. Freedom at last!

Clarence, R.I.P.

Clarence (because of his winsome cross-eyed expression) was a stray unneutered tom who frequented the Boundary Road/Church Street area of Ramsgate. He was a nice chap, who liked people and got on well with neutered cats. One morning recently he showed up in a garden, badly scratched up and bedraggled – he’d clearly been in a nasty fight with another tom. Cats in Crisis were called in and he was taken to the vets, where, sadly, he was diagnosed with FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). Suffering from secondary infections, and with nowhere to go, he had to be put to sleep.

FIV is primarily transmitted through bite wounds and occurs most frequently in fighting toms - another very good reason to have cats neutered as soon as possible. If you are concerned that your cat may have come into contact with a carrier, ask your vet’s advice. FIV is not typically fatal, and many cats who carry the virus enjoy a normal lifespan.

Fundraising quiz night, 17 April

A date for your diaries: we are holding our annual quiz night at Minster Village Hall on Saturday 17 April, starts at 7.30pm - hope to see you there.

Last year we made nearly £600 through the raffle, and we would dearly like to double it this time, so keep buying those tickets, available from our market stall on King Street in Ramsgate on Saturdays (weather permitting).

Update (Monday 19 April): The quiz was very well attended - a big thank you to all those who donated the raffle and tombola prizes and to everybody who participated. We'll let you know how much we raised - you can be sure that the cats will appreciate it!

Update (2 May): The quiz and raffle raised £500 - thank you very much! To put this in perspective, this covered having little Zulu's crippled leg amputated, improving his quality of life no end.

Shy twin sisters - seeking home urgently

Millie & Cookie (who refused to appear for the camera) are identical sisters, recently rescued and extremely nervous. They are currently being socialized by an experienced fosterer and hopefully will eventually be suitable for rehoming to a very quiet environment together, preferably as indoor cats.

Their temporary foster home is now coming to an end and they will have to go back into kennels if we can't find a home for them quickly. This will set them back no end as they were so nervous and are now coming round really well.
